St. Val's Recap: Thy goblet overfloweth with awesome juice

So overall, I had an amazing and wonderful time at ST. Val's. There were some ups and downs for sure, but once again my friends to the north have proven they can throw one hellofa party when they put their mind to it!

Kaoru and I got out there Friday night and spent a good amount of the night just being social with those who had arrived early like us. Saturday was an early day for me, I was up and helping clean in the kitchen at first light then more socializing. I was drafted for throne moving for Their Majesties, I got to talk with Master Evan for a bit and I got a hug from him! I find every event I manage to not only do the work I enjoy doing, but I'm finding more and more time just to be friendly and get to know people more.

I'd say the real highlight of the event for me was just feeling like I belonged. Everywhere I went, people were willing to talk to me and include me in whatever they were doing if I asked questions. I never truly felt alone the entire weekend, often times I was stopped by people who wanted to say hi and just catch up with me! Real highlights for me was being invited to sit and talk for a good while with Mistress Madhavi and just getting to know her better, some real enjoyable discussion and chit chat with Master Evan in regards to the SCA and all his experience and being remembered by name and asked to talk with by the Barons of Marcaster and Wyvernwoode. It just made me feel included and all warm/fuzzy inside :)

Kaoru and I also wrote a song together, whenever he transcribes the lyrics to the internets I'll add it here :)

Random poetry?

Insomnia struck last night, so I decided to free-flow write how it felt for me. A couple people liked it, maybe you will too?

Tormented by sounds and words only i can hear
Why does the moon rise when you're near?
How can my soul be so a flame
With music and candles and lights they all came
Those words and sounds and songs which to me
Torment and tease and give no rest to thee
Maybe one day it all shall end
But i will miss the muse in my head
Until such time when I rest all my days
I shall sing the moon down in every way

Lent Meal #1 - Surprisingly filling!

So, I'v made my first Lent meal tonight following the traditions of the 14th Century. These include the following:

~No Meat save for fish
~No Hard shelled fruits
~No animal products (such as cheese)
~1 Meal a day
~Fast on Friday

I was pretty good about following it during the day, and when I finally got home I was craving food. I wanted to try stay in period as well, avoiding things like potatoes/corn/food that wasn't known to Germany in the 14th century. What I came up with I was pretty happy with overall! Take a look below ;)

On the main plate I have a main dish of wild rice, broccoli and octopi bits seasoned to taste (salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder and olive oil). I have two rolls, simple bread rolls of yumminess to nom on between scoops of rice. In the bowl to the right is oatmeal with some peach pieces finely chopped, cooked with almond milk (which is pretty awesome, I'm just sayin'). To drink is a sweet tea and for dessert I have fresh blueberries and three pizzelle pieces!

The meal wasn't as satisfying as I would have wanted, but it was very filling. I am a meat eater at my core, lacking that taste of slightly undercooked flesh between my jaws means I failed to get as much pleasure from the meal as I would have liked. But, I still was full and feel comfortable and relaxed. So far meal #1 was a success!

The Lent Challenge, are you game?

Just a simple update today, but soon there will be daily updates!

I've decided to start a Lent Challenge, to recreate the meals and food customs that my ancestors would have partaken in the 14th century. That means no meat except for fish, no animal products (such as dairy), one meal a day and fasting on Fridays.

Wish me luck!

A funny little filk

I tend to doodle filk songs for my various hobbies from time to time, much to the chagrin of my friends who I occasionally make sing ;). There's been a few I've been working on the last few days...and you all get to suffer and sing through them in your head! Huzzah you!

SCA Filk - Part of Your World

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the boy, the boy who has...everything?

Look at this trove, treasures untold.
How many wonders can one big tote hold?
Looking around here you think...Sure, he's got everything

I've got spices and graters a-plenty
I've got cookbooks and whetstones galore
You want sharp carving knifes? I've got twenty!
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more...

I wanna be where the fighters are
I wanna feel, wanna feel them strikin'
Walking around in those - what do you call 'em?
Oh - greaves!

Wielding' a spoon, you don't get too far
Sticks are required for blocking, striking
Strolling down to the - what's that word again?

Up where they walk, up where they run
Up where they war all day in the sun
Wanderin' free - wish I could be
Part of that world

What would I give if I could fight for my Kings honor?
What would I pay to spend a day armored at last?
Trimarian Men, they understand,
The way to, honor fellow fighters
Jokes and drinkin', then some singin'
Moonlight to Sun

And ready to know what the squires know
Ask 'em my questions and get some answers
Why not black armor and why does it - what's the word?

When's it my turn?
Wouldn't I love, love to explore that world up above?
Out on the field
Wish I could be
Part of that world...

Yeah, I know its not great...but it make me smile and that's what matters :)
